Blue Cross

August 2011

The Blue Cross is a walk or mountain bike ride from the lowest altitude to the highest altitude in Zimbabwe that is from the middle of the Save River to kissing the beacon at the top of Mount Inyangombe, 500 hard grueling kilometers. The bicycle route this year will be all off-road, roughly 100 kms per day and only mountain bikes will be allowed. This race has run for many years to raise funds for the SPCA, a very worthy cause.
The organisers are expecting a contingent of foreign cyclists and have asked if members of the 4x4 Club would be interested in assisting again this year. They are hoping to contribute to our expenses. It will be our duty to follow up the back markers and carry broken bikes and bodies. We have just had a quick meeting with the organisers and will find out more details as soon as they are to hand.
We, the Gills, have done it a number of times and will do it again this year. The first night will be camping and thereafter we will stay in accommodation in Chipinge, Chimanimani, Cashel, Mutare and Nyanga. Think about it, it is fun and you get to see parts of the country not normally seen on the tourist routes. If you cannot do the whole route, we can split it up into sections, come on, let's help. Ed.
